Although I don’t get invited to many, I love theme inspired events planned around impeccable details. Dressing up to duplicate the theme, while fun, can be super daunting. I thrive on a good ole fashion challenge, and was excited to style my most recent client for her themed award dinner.
Erin Delaney and I connected over social media. Avid fashion lovers, it’s no surprise we bonded over clothes! She has been very supportive of my recent endeavors and I couldn’t wait to work with her. This wasn’t your typical styling session. We weren’t purging closets or revamping wardrobes, but rather literally playing dress-up!
Every year, Assemblywoman Shavonda Sumter, of the 35th legislative district, hosts a Women of Excellence award dinner in March to commemorate Women’s History month. The dinner often comes with a fun theme for its recipients, of which, are recognized for their community service and contributions to their communities. This year’s theme was “The Caribbean.” Wishful thinking for us New Jerseyans! Erin was honored with this prestigious award due to her work on the city council, volunteerism, and service in the substance abuse field.
All eyes would be on Erin, so the pressure to impress was immense. She was seeking some guidance in creating the perfect Caribbean look. I immediately got to work. I began doing some research. Ultimately, however, I went with my intuition. When I envision the Caribbean, long flowy gowns, floral prints, and brighter hues come to mind. I sent her a variety of options to choose from. We discussed hairstyles and accessories too. Erin was compliant, open-minded, and cognizant of what styles appealed to her most. In the end, we settled on a super vibrant jumpsuit accompanied by a flower in her beach waved hair. The final picture was coming together seamlessly. The straw clutch and earrings to match were the finishing touches. Realistically, now all we needed was the beach!
I am humbled by women like Erin. At the young age of 26, she has achieved so much. Her efforts, diligence, and services to her community are astounding. She truly is an inspiration to women everywhere.
I wish I could have been there to hear her speech and revel in her accomplishments. At least, however, I was privileged enough to help dress this powerful boss lady for one of the many momentous occasions in her thriving career!
This particular experience reinforces my mission statement. Fashion is so much more than material. It’s self-expression, authenticity, and originality rolled into one. It has a way of defining us sans words. When you wear something that makes you feel great, the effects while subtle, matter. Fashion sends a message that you care about yourself. Bottom line: When you look good, you feel good. I know Erin stood a little taller and prouder as she accepted her award, and that makes this all worth it. “You can have anything you want in life, if you dress for it!”
