When it comes to the latest trends, I often tread cautiously. I don’t jump on the fashion bandwagon because it’s popular or the hottest celebrity is wearing it on the red carpet. I have always shopped based on personal preference and appeal. For example, velvet is in high demand this season. I happen to love it, hence a few velvet items hang proudly in my closet. I, however, would never spend an exorbitant amount of money on a trending piece, unless I plan on wearing it for years to come. While I am feeling the velvet trend, I didn’t go overboard. I purchased some inexpensive shirts and talked myself out of overpriced booties just in case my love affair fizzles in the months ahead.
Another trend right now is embroidered blouses, bags, and pants. While I love embroidery, it just doesn’t seem timeless enough to deplete my bank account for. It’s about personal taste and discretion. Target is a good place to get your “trending fix” without breaking the bank or feeling guilty.
A popular shoe this season has been the white bootie. I saw numerous blogger friends sporting these chic shoes and became obsessed. I just never thought I could pull them off, nor did I have anything in my closet to pair them with. I decided to pass, but couldn’t seem to get them off my mind. After the holidays, the sales were rampant and I spotted an amazing pair of white booties at a great price. They were almost completely sold out but my size was still available. It was a sign: I just had to have them! I was also very wrong. So many sweaters and tops in my closet pair perfectly with these eclectic booties and I love that I can wear them throughout Spring too. Granted, they may not make a return next Fall, but this is one trend I am having fun with now!
Bottom line: Be you. If something makes you happy, go for it. Be bold and make your own fashion statements. In the past, I would have been afraid or embarrassed to wear these booties, but I am growing more comfortable and confident in my own skin and worrying less about judgements. Most importantly, I am working hard to stop comparing myself to others. Our uniqueness and individuality makes us all equally adequate and beautiful in our own special way. Fashion is fun and experimental. It shouldn’t be mundane. If it is, then it’s time to reassess or possibly call upon me to help! Joking aside, life is serious enough. Fashion shouldn’t be. Now get off the couch, grab your husband’s wallet and go buy a trending item today. You deserve it!
