In between the craziness of the girls’ activities, I was faced with one of my biggest fashion challenges thus far: styling my husband! I didn’t even initiate this challenge. He willingly approached me over breakfast and said he was in desperate need of new clothes. Now if you have ever met my husband, you will immediately learn that shopping and spending money are his least favorite pastimes! This was a monumental day in our household and I fervently accepted.

He was adamant about heading to Kohl’s. I begrudgingly obliged only because I knew the mall would never be an option and also because we were pressed for time. We walked in and for the first time he said that I had free reign. I could pick out whatever I thought looked “fashionable.” Being the stubborn man that he is, he didn’t hold up to this notion entirely but he was more compliant than usual. His biggest challenge has always been jeans. He can’t find a comfortable fitting yet modern pair for his body type. His deterrent and probably the majority of “non shoppers,” is their refusal to go to the store and try things on. That is an absolute no-no when it comes to jeans. You must, at least initially, drive to the store (yes I said drive) and try on numerous styles and brands until you find the best fit. Ordering online will never suffice! So today my husband obeyed my advice and actually stepped into a dressing room (gasp) and tried on not one but 5 or 6 different brands and styles. After an agonizing 20 minutes or so we found the perfect fit for him. We then went on to getting some shirts and everyday essentials. I actually saw a glimpse of a “shopper” emerge! Who are we kidding, this shopping trip will last him now for the next year, but hey its progress. Baby steps!

3 very crucial lessons learned:
1. Never underestimate a store like Kohl’s!! I was overly impressed with the selection and discounts. It was nice to be able to get numerous items all in one store at a very affordable price.
2. Never give up on your old-fashioned and unstylish friends and family. There is a chic and modish spirit inside them all. When it does emerge run to the nearest department store pronto!
3. Shopping is a great way to bond with your significant other. My husband and I went the entire day with out bickering! I was happy because I was doing what I love most (shopping of course) and he was happy to have some new outfits to add to his very drab wardrobe. While I wish this shopping excursion included some finds for my daughters and me too, it was nice to help my hubby and make him appreciate shopping (even for a day)!
