My idea of the perfect vacation has always been an island overlooking crystal blue waters. A romance novel in hand, as I bask in the sun. Kids, life, and financial burdens, however, take precedence. Those relaxing island getaways are just distant dreams!
My husband, however, has a completely different mindset regarding “vacation.” His version steers clear of the ocean and palm trees. He grew up frequenting Lake George from a little tyke. He has such vivid and sacred memories with his family each summer. He’s been determined to recreate them with our little squad.
Before we started our family, we use to spend long weekends there. The weather never cooperated and I was far from impressed. I begrudgingly went along for the ride, always secretly wishing I was sipping a pina colada instead! This time, however, something was different. We stayed in the same lodge Jim frequented as a child. Chelka Lodge located in Diamond Point, sits directly on beautiful Lake George. The rooms are as close to 2 feet from the water. Located between the serenity of the charming town of Bolton Landing and action of Lake George Village, it’s a prime spot.
There was no schlepping beach gear, with whining kids in tow. We simply walked out of our room into the fresh water of the lake. I was able to read and relax, while my kids splashed and swam for hours each day. Surrounding the lake, are a plethora of old fashioned games to enjoy outside of the water. When the girls weren’t swimming, they played basketball, shuffle board, and bean bag toss. I especially loved attempting and failing at stand up paddle boarding! The lack of cell service reconnected us all. 5 YouTube free days!
My husband, an avid lover of boats, wanted us to really appreciate the lake. Thus, we rented a boat for the day and drove to our very own private island. It was amazing. We ate our picnic lunch, swam around, and truly engaged. Scenic and peaceful, I didn’t need the Caribbean after all!
Jim introduced us to the very same cliffs he use to dive off of as a kid. My brave Gianna took the plunge and dove right in. I watched her fearlessly jump. It took me much longer to follow her lead. She inspired me to be just as brave. Her exact words were, “don’t look down Mommy, just jump.” It was exhilarating (minus the swimmer’s ear that ensued after the leap)!
Another highlight, was eating at the historic Sagamore Hotel for dinner. The epitome of beauty, this pristine hotel is a blogger’s dream come true. The photo opportunities are endless.
Jim was in his element. His rough exterior was much softer this week, thanks to Lake George. This trip taught me a lot. Vacations are much more than fancy resorts with lavish details. Quality time and making cherished memories are key. Lake George, while quaint and simple, is special. There’s just something about it that brings generations of families back time and time again! On our last night, Mia declared that she would have a lot of stories to share with her family one day, when she brought them back to Chelka Lodge. That made my heart melt and Jim smile. Here’s to many more years of Lake George memories and wonderful family vacations!
