It’s Summer. We should be thinking about swimming, the beach, and special time with family and friends. Our attire should be light and airy. The last thing on our minds are sweaters and boots when it’s 100 degrees outside! Retailers and social media, however, see things differently. We can no longer savor or live in the moment. The world is always one step ahead and moving forward. As soon as we settle in, the pressure arises to forge on and tackle something new. Whether it be next season’s fashion or another Holiday, there’s no time to breathe.
You may be wondering where I am going with this post or what evoked these thoughts. Sadly enough, it’s the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. As I am typing this, I completely understand how ridiculous this all sounds. Why would a sale initiate any sort of emotion?! I should be excited that impeccable designers and fall trends are on sale at amazing prices, right?! Well, I am not. If you are on social media and follow many bloggers, then you have heard about this sale for days now. Instagram is saturated with posts, try-ons, and endless banter about this “epic” sale. Pictures of privileged women shopping the sale early, snapping pictures of 5 foot long receipts, carrying an overwhelming amount of bags, continues to flood my feed. This doesn’t inspire me, but rather frustrates, intimidates, and discourages me. There’s no way I can attain that status or spend that amount, and yet in some way the pressure to, is so real. It’s stifling.
I just took out my shorts and dresses. Yet as an influencer, I am expected to now switch gears and push my followers to buy fall essentials in between building sand castles with their kids. It just doesn’t make sense! We have plenty of time for boots and sweaters. Why can’t we enjoy our Summer and focus on Fall upon its arrival? Let’s live in the moment!
In past years, I have always purchased a few items during the sale, such as boots and jackets. Essentials that can be costly otherwise. Now, however, it’s turned into utter chaos. It’s a competition to see which bloggers can sell the most, cover the most, and write the best blog posts. The more you spend, the higher on the Nordstrom tier you rise. Every year a new gimmick or perk is set forth to appeal to shoppers and lure them into signing up for a credit card. I just can’t justify spending an excessive amount of money on Fall essentials when it’s months away. Also, these same items will go on sale once again during the actual season!
As an influencer, I feel its my duty to share things that I am passionate about. Many followers told me that I should touch upon the sale because all bloggers do. This statement resonated with me. I don’t want to be like “all other bloggers.” I want to be me! Unlike other jobs, it’s not my duty to tackle every sale or overshare just to make money. I am here because I am an avid fashion lover and want to make women feel good. I only share things that I wear and can afford. In previous years, I conformed to the blogger masses, but I have since grown.
After reading this post, I hope it inspires you to learn from my previous mistakes. Never conform, follow, or try to be like everyone else. Be you. As you scroll through social media, don’t let those little squares discourage you or make you feel inferior. No one’s life is that perfect, trust me. Do what makes you happy. It’s amazing what fashion blogging has taught me about myself and where it has lead me. With all the opportunities that have stemmed from this platform, self growth stands out the most. I have made many mistakes along the way and have let my insecurities get the best of me, but I am improving. Slowly, I am becoming the blogger and stylist I was intended to be. It’s amazing how a silly sale can be so eye opening.
I don’t want anyone to misinterpret things. If you do love shopping the sale and look forward to it every year, I applaud you. There’s much money to be saved and it can be a lot of fun. Nordstrom has and always will rank high on my list for quality customer service! Blogging, however, has simply changed my mindset and approach to shopping in general. I love having this outlet to express my journey and revelations with you all!
Here’s to living in the moment and doing you!
