Wow! It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only a week away. I am not sure how that happened, but I am still digesting my turkey from Thanksgiving! It’s showtime. We are all currently overwhelmed, frantic, and knee-deep in cookie dough and wrapping paper. Take a breather and slow down. Everything will get accomplished just in time for our kiddies to wake us up at dawn!
It’s been an exciting holiday season. My friend Lisa started taking many of my blog pictures for me last year. She has a professional camera and was kind enough to help me make some improvements. Lisa really has a keen eye for photography. She takes the time to survey her surroundings and pays close attention to details. Working with her gave me an idea. Why not intertwine her love for photography and my love for fashion and styling. A reasonably priced package including both would certainly be ideal. Achieving that perfect holiday card can be daunting and expensive. Our goal was to alleviate some of that financial burden by offering a very affordable styled shoot. Someone to dress all the kids and another to take as many pictures as one’s heart desires!
On top of styling my own girls for our yearly Christmas card, we had the privilege of working with two local families as well. Our first experience was with the Neafsey family. Lisa Neafsey is a fellow Oakland mom. Our girls are in the same grade (different schools), but we never officially met until now. She reached out to Lisa to inquire about our promotion and get more details. When I spoke with her, I learned that she had a 13-year-old son named Brendan and a daughter Molly who is 10. We discussed locations, colors, outfit styles, and sizes. I got right to work. Lisa was easy and very pleasant to work with. A few days later, I even found out we went to the same college, both graduating with a degree in Communications! Talk about a small world. We were certainly destined to connect.
Brendan and Molly were an absolute pleasure to work with too. The photo shoot went seamlessly, thanks to Lisa behind the lens and these very photogenic kids. The burgundy and blue outfits that we finalized, blended nicely with the Fall foliage. There were so many beautiful shots to choose from. The icing on the cake: Lisa was happy with our work and was able to design a lovely card.
The Cosimano’s were up next. Dorothy has been our friend for a few years now and our daughters are inseparable. Tired of trying to wrangle her crew (she has 4 kids) and pay a fortune, she wanted something easier and less stressful this year. Nick 14, Vincent 12, Dominic 9, and Sofia 6, are all extremely busy with activities and time is very limited. They recently added a new member to the clan, an adorable pup named Cody. Needless to say, Dorothy has her hands full. Our laid back session was ideal. Styling 4 kids would be more challenging, especially since 3 out of the 4 were boys. “Boy” world is foreign to me! We decided to focus on Sofia first and work around her outfit. I sent her some links and she ordered a few items. Then I went to her house and we rummaged through her very impressive closet. We decided on a dress that she ordered from my links and a pair of jeans and a top from her closet as another option. The weather can be deceiving, so it is better to always be prepared. Rather then buy new stuff for the boys, I suggested some colors that would compliment Sofia’s look and we were able to find solid shirts right from their drawers. A combination of blue, burgundy, green, grey, and ivory hues would do the trick.
Another seamless photo shoot, (a little louder and more chaotic, thanks to a cameo from Cody), but nonetheless so much fun! I was so impressed with how cooperative the boys were. They took direction, smiled on command, and were wonderful with their sister, even if they secretly despised every second! Little miss Sofia hammed it up for the camera and certainly was the center of attention. When Dorothy texted us and said her card received rave reviews, I couldn’t help but smile. We achieved our goal!
This entire process was rewarding, exciting, and a positive learning experience. It connected us with wonderful families and awarded us both the opportunity to do what we love. Lisa and I make a great team and I look forward to many more sessions in the future!
